Understanding American customer perceptions on Japanese food and services in the U.S

The purpose of this study is to provide an appropriate approach for Japanese restaurant operators to identify the wants and needs of their American customers, and thereby assist restaurateurs in developing strategies that would best attract this market. There are many important attributes of Japanese food and services that affect the satisfaction and behavioral intentions of American customers. Japanese restaurant operators should recognize the perceptions of their American customers and monitor the factors affecting customer satisfaction and revisit intention. This effort will lead Japanese restaurants in the U.S. to improve their operational and marketing efficiency, and thereby increase profitability

Degrees of Freedom of Full-Duplex Multiantenna Cellular Networks

We study the degrees of freedom (DoF) of cellular networks in which a full duplex (FD) base station (BS) equipped with multiple transmit and receive antennas communicates with multiple mobile users. We consider two different scenarios. In the first scenario, we study the case when half duplex (HD) users, partitioned to either the uplink (UL) set or the downlink (DL) set, simultaneously communicate with the FD BS. In the second scenario, we study the case when FD users simultaneously communicate UL and DL data with the FD BS. Unlike conventional HD only systems, inter-user interference (within the cell) may severely limit the DoF, and must be carefully taken into account. With the goal of providing theoretical guidelines for designing such FD systems, we completely characterize the sum DoF of each of the two different FD cellular networks by developing an achievable scheme and obtaining a matching upper bound. The key idea of the proposed scheme is to carefully allocate UL and DL information streams using interference alignment and beamforming techniques. By comparing the DoFs of the considered FD systems with those of the conventional HD systems, we establish the DoF gain by enabling FD operation in various configurations. As a consequence of the result, we show that the DoF can approach the two-fold gain over the HD systems when the number of users becomes large enough as compared to the number of antennas at the BS.Comment: 21 pages, 16 figures, a shorter version of this paper has been submitted to the IEEE International Symposium on Information Theory (ISIT) 201

Highly Variable Genomic Landscape of Endogenous Retroviruses in the C57BL/6J Inbred Strain, Depending on Individual Mouse, Gender, Organ Type, and Organ Location.

Transposable repetitive elements, named the "TREome," represent ~40% of the mouse genome. We postulate that the germ line genome undergoes temporal and spatial diversification into somatic genomes in conjunction with the TREome activity. C57BL/6J inbred mice were subjected to genomic landscape analyses using a TREome probe from murine leukemia virus-type endogenous retroviruses (MLV-ERVs). None shared the same MLV-ERV landscape within each comparison group: (1) sperm and 18 tissues from one mouse, (2) six brain compartments from two females, (3) spleen and thymus samples from four age groups, (4) three spatial tissue sets from two females, and (5) kidney and liver samples from three females and three males. Interestingly, males had more genomic MLV-ERV copies than females; moreover, only in the males, the kidneys had higher MLV-ERV copies than the livers. Perhaps, the mouse-, gender-, and tissue/cell-dependent MLV-ERV landscapes are linked to the individual-specific and dynamic phenotypes of the C57BL/6J inbred population

Entrepreneurship in multinational corporations and capability development of domestic firms: An exploratory study in the US-Mexico border region

This dissertation explores the relationship between entrepreneurship and capability development in emerging markets. This study focuses on entrepreneurial activities in multinational corporations (MNCs) in emerging markets. Maquila plants and local Mexican suppliers located in (or near) Reynosa, Tamaulipas are investigated. The results from 34 interviews of a sample local Mexican supplier, maquila plant, local government, local university and Reynosa Asociación de Maquiladoras y Manufactureras, A.C. (RAMMAC) suggest that the entrepreneurship in the maquila plants occurs through the continuous improvement in the manufacturing process. The purpose is primarily efficiency and quality. The border economy that is primarily driven by the economic cycle in the United States, especially recession, tends to strengthen this trend. Recognition of new market opportunities and product development are not strong entrepreneurial activities in the maquila plants. There is currently no strong linkage between entrepreneurial activities in the maquila plants and capability development of local Mexican suppliers. However, if there are more entrepreneurial activities in the maquila plants, there will be more business opportunities for local Mexican suppliers. Local Mexican suppliers learn about the business processes from maquila plants. Entrepreneurial activities in the maquila plants can potentially have a positive effect on the capability development of local Mexican suppliers. Maquila plants learn from and do business with various sizes and types of local Mexican suppliers. The learning content of maquila plants from local Mexican suppliers includes process improvement as well as the local culture. Thus, capability development of local Mexican suppliers can potentially have a positive effect on entrepreneurial activities in the maquila plants. The governance structure between maquila plants and local Mexican suppliers is the strongest for network structure than for the market and hierarchy structures. Hierarchical structure is not strong for maquila plants and local Mexican suppliers. The governance structure between maquila plants and local Mexican suppliers on capability development of local Mexican suppliers is the mixed result. The current commitment of maquila plants to local communities is strong for employee benefits. This characteristic of local embeddedness of maquila plants is not related to the capability development of local Mexican suppliers
